Howard Gardner was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on July 11, 1943, the son of Ralph and Hilde Gardner, German Jewish refugees who escaped from Germany before World War II. Gardner described himself as “a studious boy who really enjoyed playing the piano.” Gardner never became a professional pianist, but he did teach piano from 1958 to 1969. In the Gardner household, education was paramount. Although his parents expected him to attend Phillips Andover Academy in Massachusetts, Gardner chose Wyoming Seminary in Pennsylvania, which was closer to his hometown. Gardner was eager to learn and was successful in school.
