Netflix’s The Bride Who Wasn’t: Meet Jack Dickey, The Deadspin Reporter
Jack Dickey was a college student at the time with a passion for sports and had a part-time job between his studies and was “way behind” on his graduate thesis. He was busy breaking one of the biggest and strangest stories to ever hit the world of sports. He co-wrote the fake Manti Te’o story for dead spin with Timothy Burke.
As the story goes, it all started with a tip. Manti had received significant media attention in the fall of 2012 when she said her grandmother and his girlfriend died within hours of each other. But the bride never existed.
“I was at my home in Guilford when we received the tip as a personal,” Dickey said. New Haven Record. “I thought to myself, ‘This is amazing, I’m going to look into this.’” The more he and Timothy investigated, the more they realized that this was a substantial scoop. However, Jack did not understand the true extent of his revelation until dead spinhis entire staff worked to put it all together in just five days.
“[Deadspin editor-in-chief] Tommy Craggs and Burke helped me investigate on Friday afternoon, and then Tim and I spent the entire weekend, all of Monday, and most of Tuesday digging into the mystery of this story. [Writers] Dom Cosentino and Tom Ley also made a lot of calls. Then Craggs and [managing editor] Tom Scocca edited the thing Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, and then we were basically ready to go.”
Speaking further about the working relationship with Timothy, he said thepostgame, “Burke and I divided and won on both reporting and writing. With the reporting, Burke took to social media while I focused on Kekua’s press accounts, both on broadcast and in print. Then, once we started to get a fuller picture of the characters involved, on Monday morning or so, Burke tracked down the woman in Lennay’s photos, and some of the people who had alleged that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo I was behind the hoax.”
Jack added: “At the same time, I was trying to piece together Ronaiah Tuiasosopo’s life story and trying to find people who knew him. Burke got a lot more breaks than I did in this process. He had a handful of people who would talk to him; He made probably 20 calls and left more Facebook messages and only got one guy on the phone. (He really wanted to talk to Ronaiah, but he didn’t respond to me or Craggs).”
They published the article on January 16, 2013. The story became international breaking news.
“It was kind of a surprise,” Dickey said. “We thought it would be a great college football story that would have a big impact in the sports media. It had a much bigger impact outside of that that we didn’t expect.” By February 2013, the story had been viewed 4 million times. As a co-author, he received international exposure that followed countless interviews and even a few television appearances.
“I did all the trashy tabloid shows like Inside Edition, Extra and Access Hollywood,” says Jack. “Tim was on Anderson Cooper and MSNBC.” He realized that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
At the time, Jack explained: “I will never get over this. I don’t think it’s possible. This is the biggest story in the history of this website. … For us to have a scoop like this again, I can’t foresee that happening again. Of course, I would love it to be so.”
