The Emmy Award-winning show RuPaul’s Drag Race debuted in its first season in 2009, and since then, there has never been a straight man on the show. But that all changed when “a drag queen who just happens to be straight,” Maddy Morphosis, joined the show in 2022.
“My sexuality does not define the drag that I do, it does not affect that. It’s just one facet of who I am outside of drag,” she shared.

“I broke that glass ceiling, yes. It’s finally time for a straight white guy to get his piece of the pie, right? Maddy Morphosis teased a December 2020 live stream announcing the cast. And it certainly got on the nerves of many.
Controversy soon erupted online that the show provided a “privileged cis-straight white male” opportunity, which could have gone to an LGBTQ+ person who needed it much more.
Additionally, some suggested that if RuPaul wanted a “change”, he could have cast queens with various queer identities not yet featured on the show, or even included drag kings.
Two days after the cast announcement, Maddy took it to her IG, with a 4-page long letter responding to the criticism. To sum it up, she noted that one cannot “get a full idea of who someone is” based on “short clips and snippets” online. She has had experiences that helped her understand more about “gender and sexuality” and “what it means” to her.
Furthermore, while acknowledging her “privilege”, Maddy shared that the concepts of “masculine” and “feminine” were “arbitrary and invented”. And to anyone who argues that she represents an “underrepresented group,” Maddy says, “I appreciate it, but straight men are not a persecuted and excluded group within the drag community.”
Even drag queens like Gottmik, Jasmine Kennedie, Angeria Paris VanMicheals, and Brooke Lynn Hytes supported Maddy on her Drag Race journey.
Although most of the internet believed that Maddy’s presence in the drag race was controversial, some were quick to defend her. “Drag is for everyone. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Some of you don’t seem to get that yet,” RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Divina De Campo joined the team.

As for her stage name, it is a pun on the word “metamorphosis”.
